Reading God’s Word: 1 John 4:7-5:13, Psalm 143:4-7
Memorizing God’s Word: Isaiah 53:5-6 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Meditating on God’s Word: 1 John 5:3 (ESV) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
Praying God’s Word: “Father, so often we fall into the trap of thinking that keeping your commandments is a burdensome thing. We are told being obedient to your commandments means no fun, no joy, and no feeling of peace as we are constantly afraid of your disfavor or chastisement. What we read today is the exact opposite! We find that if we love you, then keeping your commandments is not a burden but a joy! Instead of a false external pressure we can have a confident peace in knowing we are pleasing you when we love you – and that will produce a joyful obedience because after all, you want the best for us! Help us to love you above all else – and when we do, obedience will take care of itself. Amen.”
